What Is the Power Horse Stadium?

The Power Horse Stadium hosts the home matches of UD Almería or Unión Deportiva Almería, the most important football club of Almería, the capital of the homonymic province. The Power Horse Stadium came to replace the old stadium of the club, the Estadio Juan Rojas. With an investment of 21 million euros, made for the XV Almería 2005 Mediterranean Games, the sporting venue is managed by Almeria City Council. It opened on July 31, 2004.

Back then, the Power Horse Stadium went by the name “Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.” The stadium underwent a name change after its first renovation in August 2021 and the Ayuntamiento de Almería’s decision to lease it to UD Almería for 25 years. Additionally, Power Horse Energy Drinks GmbH struck a multimillion-euro deal with the club as part of the agreement.

The current state of the Power Horse Stadium.

Due to its athletic track, the Power Horse incorporates temporary stands with a capacity of 15,000. The extra seats are located between the front seats and the athletics track. These stands can be removed for a better view during football matches.

Remodeling and Renovation

The second phase of the remodeling process with the additional seats. 

In 2019, after the Saudi Turki Al-Sheik became the new president of the club, certain renovations and a complete refurbishment took place. These renovations expanded the stadium’s capacity; the Power Horse Stadium gained a new facade, and all the seats were painted red.

The second phase of the renovation plan involves lowering the football pitch and definitely removing the temporary stands to build reinforced concrete stands. These additional seats will give the stadium a more footballing look.

The home stadium of UD Almeria is located to the east of the centre of the city, a distance of 2 km away from the Almería port and from the main railway station. The club and municipality strategically planned the location of the stadium, and it’s accessible from most parts of the city and surroundings.

How to Get the Power Horse Arena

You have two options for reaching the stadium. 

• First, you can walk since it is just 2 km away from the center.
• Second, you can take bus 7 from the central Avenida Federico García Lorca to La Goleta. 
• As a final alternative, you can also reach the stadium by car, driving through the AL-12.

The Power Horse Stadium’s architecture is very simple. It consists of a basic structure of reinforced concrete on the ground level and a steel beam ceiling. In other words, its architectural structure is a classic, featuring stands of reinforced concrete on two different levels. These stands integrate comfortable seats that allow the crew to see the match perfectly from all corners of the arena.

Although the Power Horse Stadium is a classic football stadium—it does not have modern technology or special VIP boxes—it still has some fundamental facilities that we will summarize below.

Training Ground

The Power Horse Stadium includes a training ground where the youth players of the local football club can train on a professional pitch. This ground is the same size as the main football pitch and includes all the services that the Spanish cadets need to complete their training and reach the goal.

For better results, the team changes the grass every season, replacing the winter grass called Ryegrass with a summer grass called Bermuda Islands. This ground is in La Vega de Acá, at the side of the Power Horse arena.
