The History Behind the Mestalla Stadium
The Mestalla Stadium was inaugurated in 1923 with a friendly football match attended by Valencians and local authorities. The original stadium had a total capacity of 25,000 viewers.
After a natural disaster broke the majority of the stadium’s banks in the early 1950s, the Mestalla was improved, resulting in a new capacity of 60,000 attendees. The project also included artificial illumination. The inauguration took place during the 1959 Fallas, a local celebration.
The Mestalla changed its name in 1969, becoming Estadio Luis Casanova, to honor club president Luis Casanova Giner. This change lasted twenty years until Casanova requested that the stadium return to its original name.
As one of the most important stadiums in Spain, Mestalla’s foundations grew from an empty ground and mod until they became an amazing football structure. Therefore, in the 1970s, the club expanded the stadium, adding a head office, a trophy hall, and goal seats. These works were completed approximately two years later, which greatly changed the stadium’s facet.

The tours will remain open regularly except for the bench area. In this case, a panoramic view of the stadium from the lower lateral stands will replace the visit to the bench zone.

The Nou Mestalla, or New Mestalla Stadium
On November 10, 2006, former president Juan Soler and the club unveiled plans for the new stadium. The presentation, held at the Museu Príncipe Felipe in Valencia, included detailed information about the stadium and a short film showcasing its design. The Nou Mestalla site is situated four kilometers west of the original Mestalla, offering a modern upgrade while maintaining a close connection to the historic bicentennial stadium.
The construction of the Nou Mestalla started in 2007, with the participation of local politicians and Juan Bautista Soler, the club’s largest shareholder. However, the work stopped due to the economic crisis and has not resumed today.
The Nou Mestalla would have a capacity for 75,100 attendants, enabling the new stadium to host athletics competitions. This new structure would also have 3,500 parking spaces, leisure areas, a new museum of the club’s history, different VIP zones, and an auditorium for assemblies.
