What Is the WWK Arena?
The WWK Arena, formerly known as Augsburg Arena, is a major football stadium in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. Construction finished in 2009, and the first match took place that same year. This stadium hosts FC Augsburg’s home matches and is mainly used for Bundesliga and international matches.
The WWK Arena has a capacity for 10,060 seated spectators and standing rooms for another 11,034 fans. However, plans are underway to expand the stadium’s capacity to 49,000 people.
The WWK Arena also hosted several matches at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The venue is also the world’s first climate-neutral football stadium, paving the way for future ecological stadiums that take care of the environment.
The WWK Arena Location Information
The WWK Arena is located 6.7 km south of Augsburg. From the center of Augsburg, you can get there by tram, taxi, or on foot.
The Line 3 tram takes around thirty-two minutes to travel. It’s the most straightforward way to reach the stadium structure. The tram arrives at Augsburg, Königsplatz, every fifteen minutes. Once you reach the Augsburg Arena station, you will have to walk around ten minutes to the west side to find the arena.
The tram line to reach the WWK Arena
You can also reach the structure by taxi, in which case you will have to make a six-minute trip. The trip can cost you around $15 – $18.
You can also reach the arena on foot, which takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you don’t like trams, this is a good option, especially for people who want to witness league matches and enjoy a sunny day.
From the “Hauptbahnhof” stop, take the stadium line 8 to the “Football Arena” stop (stop map). The stadium line runs every five minutes on match day from 2 hours before the game and every 2 to 3 minutes after the game. The journey time from the main station is only around 20 minutes.
All admission tickets are valid as public transport tickets (bus and tram) operated by Augsburger Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (avg) in zones 10 and 20 (three hours before and after the game). Admission tickets are not considered tickets in the regional trains and regional buses of the Augsburger Verkehrsverbund (AVV).

The WWK Arena History and Architecture
The need to build a new stadium for FC Augsburg arose in 2004. At that time, FC Augsburg was still playing in the fourth division of German football. Hence, the club called for tenders for the construction of the stadium. The winning architecture firm was Bernhard & Kögl Architects.
The roof structure is supported by steel, while the grandstand structure has a reinforced concrete base. The design follows the general guidelines set by FIFA and the DFB and implements a capacity of 30,660 spectators.
FCA recently built a training center to the west of the stadium. This complex has two natural soccer fields and an artificial grass field. The FCA professional team used these fields for the first time during the 2012/13 preseason.
